Welcome to Overcast NYC! This is my stylish little fish in the big bad ocean of fashion blogging. I decided on this name because it is a reflection of my personal style, which consists of layering dusty neutral colors, mostly grey, with numerous hats and scarves. With these elements combined it seems to be constantly overcast in my closet, in the best way possible. In my life, there always seems to be some sort of storm on the horizon, and I love dressing for the rain.
I'm a fashion designer living in New York City. I have always been strongly connected to clothing and style, even from very early on in my Midwest upbringing. It has always been my goal as a designer to make clothing for real people, and not to lose myself in the flash and glamour of this industry. I love the challenge of analyzing high fashion trends and funneling them into functional designs for everyday. Design is a never-ending job, and you must pull inspiration from everything you do and everywhere you go. From fashion magazines and trend forecasting websites, to noticing what people are wearing all over the city, I am like a sponge and I soak it all up.
The idea of the “everyman” expressing themselves through clothing within their means is the heart of what I want this blog to be about. You have all seen the blogs with the breathtakingly beautiful girl lounging around in some designer dress sent to her from a PR department, in photographs taken by her photographer boyfriend. This type of unattainable post-hipster goes mainstream blogger that we have grown accustomed to has it easy. Anyone can throw couture on their shoulders and suddenly be a youth icon. But that’s not real life. Real life is having a friend’s birthday party to get dressed for and only having a closet filled with H&M, a handful of nice shirts that everyone has already seen, gifts from your mother that never fit right, and $60 for one new item to pull it all together. It takes a lot of effort to look effortless. At least that’s what it’s like in my real life. And somehow I always find a way to make it work, miraculously, even without a photographer boyfriend. (Which I’m gladly taking applications for, by the way.) I want to share with you my journey of fashion and style. This is my version of what life is like in the city that never sleeps. Welcome to my Overcast world. Pack an umbrella.
